Learn All About Phonics...

Learning phonics form an early age is key to developing reading and writing skills. Creating phonic sounds helps children to decode words and begin to read. Phonics also helps children to piece words together so that they are able to record words and sentences in their own individual way.

For pupils who are working on pre-phonic skills we use activities based on the DfE scheme 'Letters and Sounds'. Children can also follow a scheme known as Read Write Inc. This nationally recognised scheme aids tecahers to tailor phonics to meet the learning needs of each individual. Sounds are broken up into stages which are then taught to children individually or in small groups. Sessions are interactive and great fun, so much so children have been known to ask for "more phonic work please!"

Our English co-ordinator, Eloise has recently attended training provided by Read Write Inc to ensure that our teaching of phonics is as current and in line with national standards.

The video below gives a brief explantion of how phonics works and how you can start to teach phonics at home.
